It depends on your roof. A 5" eavestrough handles roughly 600 square feet of roof area per downspout and works well on most standard residential roofs. A 6" system carries approximately 50% more water — about 1,200 square feet per downspout — and is the right call for larger footprints, steeper pitches, and the kind of heavy downpours Central Alberta gets. Seamless eavestrough is formed from a continuous coil of aluminium or steel on site, cut to the exact length of your roofline with no mid-span seams. Traditional sectional eavestrough is assembled from short pieces joined together — every joint is a potential leak point, especially as freeze-thaw cycles work on the sealant over time. With seamless runs, the only joints are at the corners and downspout connections, which means fewer weak points and a cleaner finished look.

Vented soffit draws fresh, cool air into the attic along the eave line, which then exits through ridge or peak vents. This airflow prevents heat and moisture from building up inside the attic — a common cause of ice dams in winter and premature roofing material deterioration year-round. In Alberta, where attic temperatures can swing dramatically between seasons, proper soffit venting is a meaningful part of protecting your roof system.

Downspout placement is determined by your roofline geometry and the drainage conditions around your home. As a rule, downspouts should discharge at least 1.5 to 2 metres from the foundation and be extended or directed toward a grade that carries water away — not toward garden beds or flat areas that pool against the wall.
