Most people install a pergola, add string lights, and accept that bugs and wind are just part of outdoor living in Alberta. But there's a better option that more lakefront and acreage homeowners are discovering: a motorized screen room.

What Is a Motorized Screen Room?

A motorized screen room is a retractable screen system that encloses a deck, patio, or covered outdoor area at the push of a button. When the screens are down, you have a fully enclosed, bug-proof, wind-sheltered space. When they're up — fully retracted into a slim cassette at the ceiling — you can't tell they're there. The space feels like an open deck.

How the Screen System Works

The Cassette

The cassette mounts along the ceiling or soffit of your deck. It's slim — typically 3–4 inches in height — and can be colour-matched to your existing trim and ceiling. When retracted, the screen fabric lives in the cassette, protected from weather and UV. It's invisible until you deploy it.

The Screen Fabric

Wizard offers several screen fabrics depending on your priorities. The standard mesh is an insect screen — it stops mosquitoes, flies, and most other insects while maintaining airflow and views. For enhanced privacy or sun control, denser weave options are available that reduce solar gain (useful on south- and west-facing decks) while still providing ventilation.

The Guides

The screen fabric travels in channels mounted on the structural posts or walls at the sides of the opening. This keeps the screen taut and prevents it from blowing inward in wind — a critical feature. The bottom bar is weighted to keep the screen stable and closes against a bottom seal when fully deployed.

The Motor

Tubular motors from Somfy or similar suppliers are the industry standard — quiet, reliable, and designed for thousands of cycles. Low-voltage DC motors are available for battery-powered configurations where hardwiring isn't practical. Remote controls allow you to partially deploy screens (say, on the west side only for sun control, while leaving the lake-facing side open).

Why Lakefront Properties Are the Ideal Application

Mosquitoes are the obvious reason — lake-country bugs can make an exposed deck completely unusable at dusk from late May through September. But the benefits extend further.

Wind off the water is constant at many Sylvan Lake, Gull Lake, and Buffalo Lake properties. A screen room breaks the wind significantly — enough to make the space comfortable on days when an open deck would have you inside within minutes. The screen fabric's open weave still allows air movement, so it never feels stuffy.

Lake properties also tend to be used intermittently — weekends, not daily. When the screens are retracted, the deck is fully open for cleaning, furniture arrangement, or ventilation. What Structures Work Best

Motorized screens work on any structure with a defined overhead (a covered deck, a four-season sunroom frame, a pergola with a solid or louvered roof, or a carport-style structure). Open pergolas without overhead structure can also work with modifications, though the standard installation assumes an overhead cassette mounting point.

For new construction, the cleanest result comes from designing the screen system into the structure from the start — cassettes can be recessed into the ceiling, posts sized for guide channel mounting, and wiring roughed in during framing. Retrofit installations on existing decks are very common and work well, with the cassette surface-mounted to the ceiling and wiring run in conduit or through the structure.
